Manuel BERTOMEU : the new Secretary of EURAF!

Manuel Bertomeu holds a Ph.D. degree in Forestry Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and he is the Secretary of EURAF.

Since 1992 he has worked with the private sector, NGOs and international and national research institutions in forestry and agroforestry research and development in Equatorial Guinea, The Philippines, Laos and Spain.

His experience includes forest inventory and planning, reforestation and reclamation of degraded land through agroforestry, and research, with the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF), on smallholder timber-based agroforestry systems. He has also been involved in several projects supporting farmers on agroforestry establishment and management in both tropical and Mediterranean environments.

Besides working closely with farmers to address environmental and/or technical constraints to agroforestry adoption and management, he has also gained experience throughout these years by working with policy makers at local, regional and national level to overcome existing policy barriers to agroforestry.

Currently Manuel is an Assistant Professor of Silviculture and Forest Restoration at the University of Extremadura, Spain. As a result of his life experience and the plethora of evidence provided by the scientific community, Manuel tells his students that agroforestry is both, a form of sustainable agriculture and of sustainable forest management, and therefore that agroforestry is key to a sustainable future.
