AFINET project has visited Herdade dos Lagos, an organic, multifunctional farm, located in Vale de Acor - Mértola, Alentejo, on the 19th of June, accompanied by EDIA, which arranged for the visit.
AFINET visited Herdade dos Lagos, accompanied by EDIA, which arranged for this visit to happen. This sustainable organic farm grazes their olive grove, vineyard and carob tree orchard with their sheep (rotationally and holistically). It has a high regard for biodiversity (foresting large areas, converting arid areas on forest land, using native species , hotspots, sowing biodiverse and well adapted species, etc.) preserving water (5 water dams, careful irrigation, native species, key line management, protective barriers against erosion), soil preservation (organic compound production to add to the soil), and social responsibility (through locally sorted and trained manpower, distribution of farm products among workers, productivity prizes, free lodgings). This farm currently produces wine, olive oil, honey, carob, solar power, sheep, wool and fruit, among other things.
Our 3rd meeting of the Portuguese RAIN was set for the 12th of September, at EDIA,SA offices in Beja.
